Lobelia cardinalis

This cardinal flower, a non-invasive, native North American plant, lived on the bank of a brook along a trail at the Mass Audubon Museum of American Bird Art that my friend and I were walking. It was the first time I had seen or heard of this plant. My friend, who is very knowledgeable about native plants of New England, also shared with me that she was trying to grow this in her garden, realizing then the extent of water this plant needs.
